Add location fields to search widget and bar

Hi,

Is there a way to add for instance a Region field to the top search bar and sidebar widget? I would like the users to be able to specify a region right from the home page or results page, where the refine results widget does not show up. I know this would require customization but I simply do not know where to look

and even better: would there be a way to add the city field and the radius slider to the side search widget?
