change the color in body background

While I am new here and the forum is the best place to get answers for no real tech handbook on classipress it seems to me this is basic css, BUT
everything I have tried to do to just view different body colors as there is too much white for my clients taste. Like the top black bar, like the white header, like the blue menu bar, also like the white container
940px wide, but the outside body is too white and want to give the client different options as to background color.
Read all the threads and no one really came up with a good answer, tried them and no cookie treat at the end for me.
Therefore I ask your help.
