Classipress using Apache Solr search engine, use child theme or plugin?

I am not satisfied with the search result of the default search so I made a child theme which uses the Apache solr engine. I didn't really change any css, just the functionality and behavior of the search result. I'm not really a php programmer so I'm just trying to tweak the code without regard to best practices. So my theme is now already functional. Is my approach correct or is it better to do it as a plugin? Thanks
