Define Number of "Just Listed" Posts Without Using Wordpress Reading Settings

I am trying to specify, in the code, a permanent number of front page "just listed" posts only . I need this to be done completely in code and separately from the wordpress "reading" setting. So even though the " reading " setting will say "display 3 posts", the code I specify will override that and display a different number.

I am having to do this because the number of "just listed posts " , category result posts, and featured sliding ads are all synched together right now and it is causing a lot of difficulty.
