Help please - Add a new section under Random/Just Listed/Most Popular?

Hi

I want to create another block (a div?) - just for text - underneath the just listed/most popular/random block on my home page.

I've tried playing around with the index.php file but whatever I do seems to make the footer start early and get rid of the sidebar.

What is the basic code for creating a div, with just text in it, and where would it go? I'm guessing between

</div><!-- /tabcontrol -->

and

</div><!-- /content_left -->

??? Any help much appreciated.
