    How to make changes that aren't reset during upgrading? blue.css, featured.php, etc..

    I've made a few changes to the following files:
    style.css (design changes)
    styles/blue.css (more design changes)
    featured.php (get rid of featured slider)
    I also plan to edit theme-header.php (to put some text to flush right beside header)

    When I updated to the new version, all the changes went away
    I have made all the changes again, but how can I avoid that next time?
    I think it has something to do with a child theme, but I don't know how to do this, any help is appreciated!
