Line Breaks in Custom Fields (Alternative to TinyMCE using no HTML)

I'm looking for alternatives for TinyMCE as it seems to be the cause of many errors in Classipress. My users don't necessarily care about HTML, but I would like to be able to insert line breaks using a carriage return without manually adding <br /> or <p> tags each time. Has anyone figured out a Mod or workaround?
