Membership Pack Expiry Question

I have read all of the tutorials. Many thanks for providing those.

I still have a question remaining that is not answered specifically in the tutorials:

What happens when a membership pack expires?

1. Is the payment recurring thru PayPal?
2. If not, what kind of message or notification, if any, does the user get that their membership pack has expired?
3. Is a membership pack renewable, for the same period, or does the user have to sign up for a new pack?
