Is my permalink structure slowing me down?

I have used /%postname%/ all along. And in the process of troubleshooting two slow sites, I came across the paragraph in the Wordpress docs "Structure Tags" Using Permalinks « WordPress Codex
As well as this referenced article Category in Permalinks Considered Harmful » Otto on WordPress

Both suggest never using just the postname, or even beginning it with postname, tag, author or category because it will slow the site down.

Any thoughts? And is it too late for me to change a current site?
