Registration Option

I need to add a dropdown at registration where the users picks student or Professor once they do that when they hit submit it change their role to either contributor or subscriber. Another option if this is not available would be when they hit submit it emails the admin weather they are student or profe with their username and we can change them over manually. Any ideas?
