Registration - Spam issue

Registration is worrying for a classified site because it leaves the site wide open to spam - The user registers and is then free to contact every poster on the board just by providing his/her e-mail and username and is then free to start e-mailing all the posters, so many of my users are seeing this obvious hole, some have actually had mail and I have acted. I can't believe that this is so open with no ability to switch to a more protected method (registration held till approved by admin), classipress in its present guise is a spammers paradise.

I did a search of this issue and found reference in JobRoller to the same issue and the use of Stop Spammer Registration Plugin and Ban Hammer which I will have to look at to provide some form of sticking plaster.

How are others addressing this and why is there no option to hold initial registration submission until approved (I know it use to be this way but was removed on request)

Surely we should all be trying to stop spam not providing a means to aid it
