Updating theme when using child theme

I see that you can update from within classipress by going to Appearance/Themes and there is link to automatically update, but this will erase all changes. Correct?

That is the reason for making changes with a child theme. Correct?

If the above is correct, how do you update theme? I'm using v 3.1.8 and v 3.1.9 is available.

What needs to be done with/to the child theme already created? Do I need to make another newer one?

What else needs to be know?
