Home page design questions

Hi again,

I'm trying to set up my home page, and there are a few things I haven't been able to figure out yet:

1) Is it possible to change the background image in the "spash" heading? Also, is that area a fixed size, or can it be made taller?
2) How to remove the side bar so that the main body area is full-width. I've seen a couple people ask related questions, but I didn't see a simple answer. I tried removing all the widgets from the sidebar, but as you can see, the sidebar is still there: http://inglista.com/
3) How do I remove the Appthemes banner ad at the bottom of the homepage? I don't find it in any of the widget areas.
