After adding a background image

Hi
After I added a background image (A light wood design) its made all the widgets show up with white backgrounds which makes it look ridiculous.

Is there a way to make the widget holders (I think that's what their called) have transparent backgrounds so they blend in with the background no matter what the colour or design.

Perhaps someone's had this problem and found an answer.

I'd be grateful to know what it was please.
