can I use another Permalinks format?

Hello. I've just gotten my copy of ClassiPress and I'm very excited to use it. However, I got stumped when I read in the docs that I must set the permalink structure to /%postname%/. WordPress.org says that it's not a good idea to have this type of permalink, and that there must be at least one numeric value in front (such as %year%). If I use my own permalink structure -- for example, /%year%/%postname%/ -- will this affect how ClassiPress works?
