Create menu like the 'Current Listings' roll over drop down menu

I love the drop down menu for the listings:

Its a cool looking drop down, but I would like to use it else where as well but for displaying categories from else where and the child categories.

For example I want to have posts as a knowledge base type thing, with some guides and I'd love to have the menu display the categories and subcategories the same way.

For example:

This would be pretty cool.

I think I would register a new taxonomy for a category, and a post type though - so it doesn't include things like my blog posts in it.

Any one have any ideas?
