General question: about giving wp-admin access

Hi!!

I am interested in a plugin for my website with classipress + child theme, and I asked the author about the compatibility with the childtheme. The author asks me for the wp-admin access to try the plugin on my website... but I am a little reluctant to give my wp-admin access... On the other side, I understand that this would be the only way to try the plugin, without purchasing it and risking that it doesn't work properlyl...

What can you tell me? is this a normal practice? How could I do to be sure that "nothing" is going to happen, due to give wp-admin access to someone I don't know??
