How to remove subcategories from primary nav bar dropdown

I am building a ClassiPress site and I am to the point where I am adding categories. I noticed the categories drop down list found on the site's primary horizontal nav bar displays all categories with sub categories (those with designated parent categories).

How would I go about adjusting the ClassiPress program to only shown the primary categories and not the subcategories in the site nav bar dropdown?

Also, is there a way to lock some of the main categories so users must post to the subcategories?
