How do you ad a custom avatar and description when an author has multiple listings?

When a visitor wants to look at all of the listings of a poster, they get a url something like this: http://mysite.com/author/a-particular-poster/

1. on that page above their listings is a placeholder for an avatar. how do you ad a custom one and what size should it be?
2. there is also a place for a description. how do you ad that?
