Very overdue update

I have CP version 3.0.5.4 - before a lot of structural changes happened. And I modified it quite a lot, mostly in a child theme. Every time there is a new WP update I worry that this is the one that will stop my CP site from working because my CP is so out of date now. I want to update it but I know lots of changes to the structure have happened since my version and I'm afraid if I do my site will be basically disappear and I'll have to start from scratch - which I can't do as most of the content comes from the advertisers.

I'm not a web-designer and I've forgotten most of the things I learnt when I was originally making the site 2 years ago. Can someone offer me advice on how to upgrade without disaster, or point me in the direction of an idiot's guide, so that I don't completely destroy my site.
