Best way to customize the theme - Jobroller

Hello,

I am using Jobroller theme. I want to customize the theme. I believe the best way is to do it through creating a child theme. Or do you suggest anything else?

Customization that I need to start off with:
- Removing fields from pages.
- Adding fields to pages.
- Changing data types for fields (like dropdown to text etc.)

I tried to implement a child theme and included only parent style.css in my child style.css. But I see that the look and feel of the site was broken. Do you have any specific documentation to follow for customizing jobroller theme?
