Any way to remove gap between banner and search panel in narrow resolutions?

My site looks generally looks good in a full-screen browser and on iPads in landscape orientations. However, if the browser window is made a little narrow, or in portrait mode on tablets (and on phones) the search gizmo becomes taller as the search button move to the next line...the generates a large gap between my top header image and the search gizmo. Is there any way to eliminate this gap? See attached screen-shot showing the gap. Thanks for any info!
