Driving me nuts

I have 3.5.2 wordpress installed but language options not showing.......
I have Vantage 1.2.1 dev build installed

I have made a child theme and that is working fine

I have modified wp-config.php to for Italian and when saved and uploaded my admin panel is in kind of Italian....I wont update to the 3.5.2 pack yet because reports say its buggy.....plus I want the admin panel to be in English anyway........

I have uploaded it_IT.mo & it_IT.po files into almost every directory I can think of which I have read so far........but the main one I think it should be in is wp-content/languages/themes

I have even tried renaming the files with my child theme name in it..... op-it_IT.mo etc

NOTHING......not a glimmer of Italian in my theme

Any ideas??
