problem with home page and featured listings

Ok, bear with me I'm trying to figure this out since I just installed the program.
The home page I suppose(d) is supposed to be the page int he system called "home". I tried editing it but it didn't make any changes to the front end. I noticed too under its attributes there wasn't a setting for "default template" strange. Also it was set as the home page in the vantage customizer editor but still when I made updates to it nothing showed on the front end.
So I made a page and set it in the customizer as the home page also ticked it under attributes for default template and it shows up and I can edit it. so I suppose that is ok but not figuring out why the default isn't wouldn't work.
But now if you add a listing and feature it on homepage, well it doesn't show up. So how to fix that?
Help, suggestions much appreciated.
