Migrating from another directory, creating new WP users with import

Hello, I got the import to work nicely on our site, couple questions though
1- I added a default featured_attachment image to the sheet, it did not get set in the listings though. Does it need to be in the attachments as well? I had it only in the featured_attachment column.

2- Even with the email in the author column, no new users were generated. Is there a step to get a WP user created during the import? It did create the "contact the owner" button which is fine. I'm migrating from another directory though so I want to ease the introduction to the users we have, I'm trying to avoid having to push them through the "claim" process.
