Subcategories in main category sidebar

Hi,

I somehow cannot get subcategories to show within a main project category.

So when you click on a main category, the sidebar should show a list of subcategories that are attached to that category and only those.

I've tried if (is_archive( 'page_id' ) ) {}
is_tax and several other solutions however none worked.

Does anyone have an idea on how to get this to show?
