is it possible to filter not by city but by state?

I'm setting up a jobroller website but client wants some results filtered by state. we have 3 different ones. I looked at the demo but only cities were available. listing by cities in this project will not be practical as we have one big city - washington dc - surrounded by 2 states - maryland and virginia. any assistance will be appreciated. thanks.
