I was using the latest version PHP 7.1.2 --- when I recompiled back to PHP 5.6, then everything was ok.
Mohsin responded back and said that he haven't been able to test it on PHP 7+...

When you create a custom field the meta name is unique to that field, even if you change the field name at a later date.

This is so information that may have already been submitted under that...

Development builds are stable releases that include bug fixes after an official release. I recommend to use the normal version, unless you like to check the dev. build several times for new changes....
