Hi There we are looking for a directory that can handle the below features.
We need the following features...there are only a few basic ones but we need to be sure this theme can handle it.
Would you mind letting me know if we can do it and I will purchase it right away (please let us know which membership we would need also please)

User/Members Registration/Administraton and online directory

Registration administration
1. Producers, Retailers, Restaurants, Caterers will be able to register their details using an online form including a field for image upload. This image should be a set size (company logo) NOTE: This form will have collapsable fields i.e. If a user chooses producers in the first tick box that should only see the field pertaining to producers on the form.
2. User details will be in stored the system and an email sent to admin for moderation. Admin login to the system and registration is then approved/disapproved and the user is notified automatically via email and provided login details
3. User can now self administer their listing (note any changes need to go through the moderator for approval)
4. User login screen will be placed in widget area on the site
5. User registration button will be placed in a widget area
6. A facility for exporting data as CSV will be required.
7. Data from old site will need to be IMPORTED via CSV as well

Website search/online directory
1.A search button will be placed on the website in the widget area linking to the database search page.
2.Search page will be developed - Find local food which will have some text and the following search functions
o Search by KEYWORD (free text search, including words and/or postcode)
o Search by CATEGORY (Drop down) producers restaurants retailers, farmers markets, etc.
o Leaving KEYWORD blank and choosing one category should return a list of enterprises from that category only... presume this would be in alphabetical but maybe it could also be by location as we already know the co-ordinates... would require users to enter the location they want to use to conduct the search around.
3. Search return page will list the search results in alphabetical order with 10 to a page and next and previous buttons for navigation.

Sub Categories
o There will be the ability to set up as a sub category of retailers in the database. This will also be included in the directory search functionality

In answer to your questions (note, I have tried to clarify if something is already included by default or if it would require customization). Not all of the features you mention are part of the theme, but there is no encryption which would prevent you making these changes yourself if you wish:

1. By default, the registration process only involves the user the input a username and email address, however you can customize this yourself if you wish to allow other fields, and we do have a tutorial available here for this purpose.
2. User registrations are stored in the default WordPress user admin, however there is no option to approve/deny registrations themselves by default. This is not a feature of WordPress, so would require customization.
3. Yes users can edit their listings
4. You can modify the theme if you wish to do this.
5. As per answer to #4, this is possible through customization
6. WordPress has a built in export tool which saves files in XML format
7. Vantage has a built in .csv importer which can be used to import bulk listings. You can also read about importing here.


1. The default search options in Vantage are those found on the main homepage, with the "Refine search" option available in the sidebar of a search. Any additional search locations would require customization on your part.
2. See above answer #2 regarding search
3. You can set in the Vantage admin if you want the search results to show alphabetical or highest rated first, but the site visitor can also refine or change this in the advanced search from the front end. The number of results per page is determined by your default listing per page setting.


You can create whatever categories you like for listings, however there is no specific option for the retailers as you describe. This would also require some customization. Thanks.

I am a little concerned about the limitations with the search function and add extra fields - are there any plugins that can enhance the search process of the directory at all?
Is adding extra fields easy and done regularly by users?

You're welcome :) We have the AppThemes marketplace where you can find theme add-ons and child themes, and one plugin in particular Multi-City AV, although isn't specifically "search" as such, it can give you the option to add location based filters to the homepage. If you want to see the custom form builder in action, we have a video tutorial available on this blog post so you can see how easy it is to set up. Yes, users do use this functionality as it allows them to create the form relevant to their listings. I am really impressed with a lot of the themes that use vantage...few more questions

I like this theme and it seems to do most of what we want out of the box. A few things we need to know ….

As with most wordpress themes I assume we can do the following without needing to touch code … I'd say yes looking at other sites that uses the vantage them, but I just want to confirm.

1. Remove the Search feature from all pages except the directory page?
2. Retain the main menu nav bar along the top of the site - I assume this menu bar works the same as any wordpress menu and you can add/remove in the menu set up in the back end.
3. Customise home page to include ..

a) Home page slider feature? - e.g woo themes slider plugin
b) featured areas
c) blog entries

(does this theme have widgetised areas that can be set up on the home page?)

4. We need to be able to add sidebar widget manager so we can use different side bars for different sections of the site - e.g woo theme sidebar plugin
5. Need to be able to add events calendar, recipe plugins, etc
6. This cost is an ongoing fee isn't it? This isn't a one off payment for the theme?

1. The search feature/main header bar appears on all pages by default, so it would require customization in order to remove this from others.
2. The nav menu along the top of the page (above the search) can be updated using the default WordPress Appearance > Menus function. This is also the case with the footer menu.
3. There is no encryption which would prevent you from making customizations to the current layout, but of note, AppThemes does not officially support third party plugins, so we cannot guarantee they will all be compatible with our themes. Yes, Vantage includes widgetized sidebars for various pages as well as the header and footer, you can see more of this from the Vantage admin dashboard here.
4. Refer answer #3 regarding plugins and sidebars.
5. Events functionality is planned for the next major release of Vantage v1.2, the release date for which is indicated on our theme release status page.
6. The initial cost includes a lifetime license and 12 months of support and theme updates. Subscription renewal is optional after that time, but if you do purchase a single theme and wish to continue the subscription it is $29 per year as mentioned on the pricing page. Thanks.

Great about a new release coming....however will other plugins work

I know you mentioned that you cannot guarantee other 3rd party plugins will work but we will need a few other plugins like adding recipes plugins and other blog features so we need to be fairly comfortable that this theme app will not restrict normal wordpress operations?

Running two sites....?

Is there anything stopping us from developing the site at as multi wordpress site? We can develop the "main" site with all the plugins we need using our chosen theme and place a button/link/whatever to take you off to the directory and vantage theme. The directory will work independently from the "main" site using the vantage theme as a separate site. We can then simply add a logo, changes the theme colours, etc on Vantage and it will look like you are still in the main site?

Unfortunately as mentioned, we really cannot guarantee that all the plugins you want to use will work fully with the theme. Not all plugins support custom post types (which is what all of our themes use), so that certainly rules out those. Anything else is trial and error and unless it's a popular plugin which may have been tested by someone in the community, we can't always confirm either way.

Our themes are compatible with WordPress multisite, so there is no issue there. Again, the question of plugins comes down to compatibility as explained above, but customization as you describe is definitely possible. Thanks.
