Password Protected WP-Admin Directory Causing Hiccups In User Dashboard

OK, so I've password protected my wp-admin directory through my host so I have two password gateways to go through before I can access the admin area of my site.

Now, all is sweet in FF, but in IE8, Chrome and Opera when a user is in their dashboard and clicks on 'Edit Profile' they are faced with an 'Authentication Required' pop-up. Now they can bypass this by clicking on Cancel and they will be directed to their profile page.

Now this pop-up should only appear when somebody is trying to access the admin area so why is this pop-up appearing in the user dashboard and how do I prevent it from doing so in future? What am I missing here... ?

Default user role is set as contributor.
