Speed and input field labels

I am in a discussion with my hosting company (HFW) about the general lack of speed of most of my web sites. We threw out expensive StudioPress themes although beautiful they were extremely slow killing the sites totally. Classipress is replacing these site and has a better speed performance than StudioPress but still is slow. We have taken away things like supercache (in conflict with
WP 3.01) and corrected an error or two in the stylesheets. It is clear that the more fancy widgets or plugins you add the more loading time you need for your site or conflicts with the main script can occur so be very careful with adding these. Does anyone has more tips for us on increasing speed, loading time of the Classipress theme? Can someone tell me if it is possibile to place the field labels of the input fields above the input fields so that on could one straight line (left oriented) rather then a very confusing left to right bunch of field labels and input fields?
