Permalink changes when listing updated in front end

I have set /%category%/%postname%-%post_id%/ as my custom permalink structure but this is for blog posts and doesn't affect the listings URL in Vantage right?
Actually I am fine with www.domain.com/listings/etc but I notice that when I edit a listings permalink in the "admin area or back end" it is fine until some kind of text or other edit is made in the front end and resaved. Once an edit is made in the front end and the listing resaved the permalink reverts to the listing title. That is a disaster.
Is there anyone who knows why this happens and what I can do to retain the custom permalink that I set in the Wordpress admin?

If anyone has a better solution than www.domain.com/listings/etc that doesn't break anything else, please also advise because I understand that this may slow the website if there is a lot of content.
