We recently launched a site that is affiliated with a print classified paper. It charges for ads by word count and also charges for picture insertion and bold print in the printed version (we couldn't figure out an easy control for the online version). There is also a custom export that exports the ads for online and print to an rtf file for typesetting. We converted the blog to use as a service directory and plan to use comments for reviews.
It also features clickable rotating banner ads with click and impression counter which are managed from the admin dashboard.

A neat and classy modification even with the use of default classipress template.

You seem to be going in a good direction. My only "complaint" is its too busy..the sidebar ads art too big for the site. I would focus on the categories that are working, then add others as you gain more users.

how did you make it so the URL reads domain.com/the-ad-url and not domain.com/ads/the-ad-url?

The site looks really messed up in Google Chrome.
The water image hangs down over the menu, covering "Distribution".
If I click on Distribution, it shows a large block with a broken image link.

It looked okay in FireFox. . .I didn't check with IE or Safari.

This is running on an IIs server. I just set up the permalinks as per the installation video and then added something to the web.config file for the URL rewrite. I you are on an Apache (linux) server I imagine you would do something in the .htaccess file.
