Adding Another Section To Vantage Theme

I am going to add another section to Vantage. For example add live event, add new listing A, add new listing B.

In the admin there will be be three sections of users instead of two.

On the map there will be three different flags instead of two.

I will add another orange button.

Before I begin is there a best practice or best solution for this or should I dive right in?

I read some where that a child theme should be created so as not to interfere with updates?

If anybody has some knowledge about this please let me know.
