Disable payment and use third party membership option

I am wondering if it is possible to disable the payment process. I am just setting up a new site and wanting a better way to handle payments and renewals than the system that is in place. There are many great third party membership plugins out there which handle payments and renewals so wondering if anyone has tackled this instead of using the Vantage payments system? I am going to look in to this but wanted to check if anyone had tried another way first.

I think Appthemes should have focussed attention on making payments and renewals rock solid rather than events functionality. Events is a great feature but payments and renewals functionality should be core to your app.
