Is there a way to strip out special characters entered into the search query?

Search phrases that include apostrophes can often throw up no results even when its a direct match to a title of a listing.

I am guessing its because some keyboards generate differnt codes for apostrophes and maybe this creates an issue when searching. SO am wondering if its possible to strip special characters like apostrophes when analysing the search phrase
