Hi I'm going to give wordpress a try.

Which FTP and web server does anyone recommend?

Also do u think it's possible to make websites for clients and companies using wordpress or is it too obvious to make money that way?

Yes you can make money that way!
Actually it is a good way to sale cheap website developments, what in these chrisis days it is very good.
My only advice is not just to sale what you buy in AppThemes, Themeforest, WooThemes,,, or whatever... I think you should redesign+develop the original templates. So, in my opinion, the best it is to make your clients buy the original themes and then you change those themes in order to exactly fit your clients needs

Concerning a good server there are A LOT depending on your particular needs.

Advice your clients to buy the closer theme to fit their needs. After this just provide them your service per customizing the theme you already adviced to them, in order to exactly fit their needs.

As I told you: good servers are a lot, depending what do you need... dedicated? one domain? multiple domains? infinite domains? with or without DB? shared? reselling host? php version? mysql version? just for wordpress? windows based? linux? ......... Googling you may find A LOT!
