It's the same in Safari, Chrome, IE9, FF.

The text "Search for (eg resaurant, florist)" Just doesn't fit in such a small area.

I see … fixing it ASAP at client website.

Concerning the font it seems your PC it is not rendering the "helvetica" very well (or you have not good copy of that font), if you test the site on a PC with non installed helvetica font it will take the next font (Arial) and that way renders excellent.
