Action hooks and child themes

Being a complete newbie at coding I was wondering if any of the veterans out there could point out any articles they might have found interesting about using hooks. Particularly I have been searching for anything that could explain how to use hooks in a child theme.

I have been googling like mad, have searched this forum and read the the wordpress codex, however I am still searching for that diamond in the rough. Until a few hours ago I was under the impression that you copied the files you need into the child theme and made code changes there (did i mention that I was a newb )
