    setup multisite with different themes?

    Hi all,

Looking for an opinion from someone with multisite experience...

What I want to do is set multisite up for multiple themes (e.g. classipress.mysite.com AND jobroller.mysite.com AND forums.mysite.com). I have seen a fair few posts on how to setup multisite for either a classipress site OR jobroller site that has multiple subdomains (e.g. site1.classipress.com ; site2.classipress.com) but this is different.

I want a network that has this structure so that people can use it in a similar way to a social network with single login but for practical community based stuff...
    - news page (normal blog page on main domain)
    - Classipress
    - Jobroller
    - Forum

So far I have had some issues with the themes plugins conflicting with eachother and what to see if anyone else has tried this before???

For example, I installed Wordpress MU domain mapping. Then tried to install classipress. However, I had some issues with a widget from my blog page (a facebook like box) conflicting with the in-built theme widget as a fatal error. I'm not looking for a fix for this one issue - I am just wondering if it will be worth my time trying to combine different themes on the same network or whether I will have lots of these issues and if its likely they will be a pain to fix?

Done a lot of reading and haven't got a long way... any comments would be great.

    Cheers

I have a wp multisite with all the themes installed and i dont have any problems. I did not use sub domains to install them but sub directories. Maybe the method you are using is causing the problem. Have you tried creating sub domains with cpanel?

    Thanks for the reply dimitris.

I initially tried several things trying to follow the wordpress codex instructions
    - creating subdomains in cpanel with their own wordpress installs and mysql databases. Then creating new site from network admin - this just takes me to the existing site
    - creating subdomains in cpanel without further installs. Then creating new site from network admin - this just takes me to a blank page of the subdomain even if network says a theme is installed...

Once I installed domain mapping it wouldn't let me do the first option at all ("site already exists"), SO using domain mapping
    - I created site (without creating cpanel subdomain) and I was able to login as super admin

However this brings me back to my original problem - conflicting theme plugins because it is on the same wordpress install

I am pretty sure taht I won't be able to do a sub-directory setup because of the existing permalink structure, and I think I would prefer subdomains anyway...
So, I guess the real question is - is it possible to create a multisite using separate mysql databases and wordpress installs, or is the whole idea of a network that it is based on one wordpress install
Also, is it possible to create the network multisite without having to use domain mapping (just to rule this out as an issue) - I have also ordered a dedicated IP to see if that helps, will be ready to trial in about 24 hrs.

Thanks again for your suggestion on the sub-directories

    Cheers,

By the way, here is the error that occurs when I try to install classipress and then go to the site's dashboard...
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare widget_flb() (previously declared in /home/me/public_html/wp-content/plugins/facebook-like-box/facebook-like-box.php:54) in /home/me/public_html/wp-content/plugins/facebook-like-box/facebook-like-box.php on line 54

Classipress works once I deactivate the other facebook like box... but once again I am not looking for a fix for this one solution, just wanting to know how I can avoid isues like this

    Cheers,
    Caleb

Fix for the individual plugin issue - Was able to make the theme and plugin work on the network this way...
Deactivated plugin and then added classipress and then activated plugin again… No issues so far.

Multisite is using one database and one WordPress installation. What functionality are you looking for?

OK, just wasn't explicitly stated in the wordpress instructions that I had to use one database so I was trying to incorporate existing sites - but I have since read more about importing wordpress sites into the one installation.

Main functionality (now that I have figured out how to import existing sites) is just having the ability for users to login with the same details across different sites.

I think I will just have to play it by ear and work out individual issues as the come along, and if not I will look into using sub-directories instead.

    Thanks for your help

Since there is only one database all the users can login to any of the sites. Good luck with your project and if you need help with any issue you can create a thread here : )

Dear Dimitris, - that's an interesting point - working with wp multi site I'll be able to use e.g. vantage/classipress & Jobroller side by side and a user having automatically access to all diff. themes - how about different defined packages /site - have you every setup different packages / site and assigned how those packages to an user?

You can achieve this using the following plugin which will add new users automatically to each blog of the multisite
