    Classipress child theme updating wordpress modification

    I am new to setting up a child theme. I know that the child theme allows you to make updates to wordpress and classipress without changing the childtheme functionality.
    I am planning on using Classipress and adding a modification and plug in for it. Additionally I plan on using security plugins for wordpress.
    I am wanting to have the ability to update wordpress and classipress if needed. How would I do this?
