Has anyone tried adding another custom post type for a "static' listing beside CP?

Hi, I'm considering CP for a new project.
The basic needs are satisfied by CP, eventually with minor adaptations, but I was also asked to provide a listing of shops that do not have any direct relation with the CP posts. This listing is rather simple with 4 or 5 fields, like shop-name, address, URL, telephone.
As an example, if my site were about used cars, this other listing would be about auto-repair shops, or auto parts shops.

I was wondering if I could use Wordpress' CMS features to manage that list of shops. The admin would do the editing, using the control panel. The listing itself would be served as a full listing 10 or 20 posts to a page, with a search function based on name, or location...

This is what I'd like to have, now how do i build it?
I thought of creating another custom post type for the listing.
Has anyone tried something similar? Would CP play nice with something like this?
Am I completely off the track here? Any input is appreciated
