Enable custom home page

OK - Enable custom home page

This sounds straight forward but seems to be a little unclear how this is intended to function and there is no docs.

Here is what I had in mind. A home page with its own content called 'home' plus another separate listing page called 'directory'.

Using the Enable custom I can select home page but the listings seem to appear on the home page by default and I'd like to know I get them to show on another page without risking messing it up. i thought it would a case of moving some shortcode to the page you want but that doesn't seem to be the case.
