Apply membership to newly registered users

I am creating a site with classipress where I will be allowing businesses to post their used products. Here is how I would like to do it and need help on figuring out the flow of doing this.

1. I am the only person who can sign them up
2. I would like to give them x number of days free to use before they begin to pay monthly
3. In the future I might have some I signed up on $5 a month plan but now the new ones I want to charge $10 is this possible?

I know that I need to make a member package. I am just kind of confused on how to give them x days free. I tried it after signing up a test account and saying their package expired on x date but it didn't do anything after that date. Maybe I did it wrong. Any ideas would be helpful or maybe someone has done something similar and has a better way of doing it.
