How to add HTML tags to the Directory items.

Hello,

I want to add an arrow to each Main Category in the Directory list, which upon clicking will expand the Subcategories below.
How would I go about adding the arrow image next to each main category <li> element? I've considered appending it with jQuery, but maybe there is a cleaner way around?
