Preventing SPAM

I got my classipress site all setup a couple months ago and then had to leave it alone for a while. I went back to it today and found that no less than 5,000 ads had been posted totally spamming the site. What's the best way to lock that down before I launch? And, also, what's the best way to clean it up - how can I quickly delete all those ads (and there's a ton of spam posts as well)? There must be some box I didn't check that I should have???
