Removing the purple background colour on the header area under the main nav?

Hi there, I have followed this thread here: http://forums.appthemes.com/help-usi...-purple-79808/ to get rid of the purple background colour on the header area under the menu on the homepage. i have tried the css as follows without any luck in my child theme:

Any ideas on this I can send a private message with access to my site if needed. Thanks in advance
