Events Category/URL problem

Hi there
My events are suddenly not showing when clicked on, even though they are listed on the site. Ive had to put it under 'maintenance' as visitors were meeting with invalid links. The front page works fine, the listings are all in their usual order and it all looks ok until you try to click a link to get more info on the event itself. I did notice that if the link is .../event/this-event-name-and-date then it doesnt show, but if the link is events/this-event-name-and-date (that is with the added 's' after event) then the link works perfectly. Can you let me know where this link is defined and if possible to show any event link that's url has event/events in it.
