Disabling Auto Renewal Mail Out For Testing Purposes

I had a bizarre incident yesterday when I recevied a renewal email from the site and a payment by paypal, yet the listing remained expired and no payment order was logged.

I then realised that the listing owner had responded to an automatic renewal email generated from my development site, and therefore that the listing on that test site had been renewed and the payment order was logged there!

For the time being I have deleted the test site to prevent such further mishaps, but is there a way to disable the automated outgoing emails to listing owners like this on a future test site?
I tend to create a staging copy of the live site in order to test new plugins, changes, updates etc - but I obviously dont want a second set of automatic messages being sent out to listing owners.
