Slider and child theme question

I had a Classipress site years ago so I've used child themes but I'm sure things have changed in 5 years.

Just bought Vantage and followed the instructions in the documentation to create a child theme - which is just create a css file and copy 3 bits of code into it.

Do I not have to copy the whole css file? (In which case, which css file would I copy? There are several)

Also, do I copy the php files of the elements I want to change and insert them into the child folder as well?

My first problem though is, having made the css file and activated the child theme, I'm trying to change the images on the home page slider and I can't for the life of me find how to do that. I went to the documentation on this site and the instruction talks about header images and background images, but when I play with them they're either above the slider or below it.

Also I don't have that Colors option, it doesn't come up. I don't think that's where the slider images are, but I seem to be without some choices that the normal Vantage theme has.

I don't want to activate the normal Vantage theme though because I am planning on making changes to functionality (adding search bars etc) and I know that's a problem when the themes get updated.

Am I doing this wrong - re the child theme?

How can I change the images on the slider? (screen-width image below the logo)

I've downloaded the Site Origin plugins as recommended but they don't make any difference to these issues.
